I think that since Hindley and the Lintons disapprove of Heathcliff, they do not want him to influence Catherine, so they want them separated. It seems that Hindley wants to punish, or take revenge on, Heathcliff by separating them as well.
I think Heathcliff's dogs were homeless strays that he took in because no body else would. (Like when Mr. Earnshaw took him in to live with his family when no body else would.) I think the dogs are so vicious because they represent how cruelly Heathcliff was treated by Hindely and the Linton's growing up.
I think Catherine acts differently in order to impress Edgar and get his interest in her since Edgar comes from such a polite and wealthy family. But when she is around Heathcliff she feels comfortable and doesn't feel the need to impress Healthcliff since she's lived with him her whole life.
Catherine feels comfortable being herself around Heathcliff. In Chapter 8 (or 9?) Catherine even states her and Heathcliff are essentially the same person. I think this is too why she acts differently around Edgar. Because she's not the "same person" as Edgar, she feels the need to live up to his standards.
I feel as though it has a lot to do with the fact that heathcliff and Catherine grew up together, Catherine is basically Heathcliff's one and only true love and he will continue to love her no matter how bad she treats him. Furthermore, she has made it quite clear that she still does love Heathcliff, it's just that she's way out of his social class, so they can never have each other.
I understand what Chris means. That their connection is almost stronger than just a relationship of love, it is as if they are best friends and Heathcliff has so much love for her that he wants to protect her and be her one and only. Their love kind of reminds me of Forest Gump. in all seriousness. It is like how Forest loves Jenny and Jenny acts like she does although she doesn't allow Forest to be her one and only. Forest is oblivious to what most of Jenny does to him but he just keeps loving her and going back to her.

She hasn't seen or probably even thought of Heathcliff in years, and to see him at the present stage in Ellen's story, he's strong, athletic, and probably rather dashing as well. Heathcliff also keeps wanting to spend time with Catherine which is one of the first reasons why Hindley started to hate him in the first place.
I think hindley never got over the jealously he felt towards heathcliff because of the affection mr. Earnshaw gave heathcliff. Now that Mr. Earnshaw is dead hindley is free to take out his anger
I think he does this because of his wife's death. The sight of the child may have reminded him of Frances causing him to take no interest in the baby. Hindley couldn't handle the despair of losing his wife causing him to spiral downwards.
Hareton is the living representation of his mother, and I feel that Hindley can not face his wife's death directly, thus, not interacting with his son.
i think its because they figured she learned her bad manners at her house so they saw it as an unfit environment for a lady and they took her ankle as an opportunity to teach her how to behave but im probably wrong
Jess, I think you're absolutely right, and to add to that, it would probably have been impractical to try to move Cathy back to Wuthering Heights with such a nasty wound to her ankle.

Yeah it's Nelly (Ellen). Hindley hates Heathcliff because he is horribly jealous that Heathcliff was his father's favorite, even though Heathcliff is adopted. The Earnshaws don't like Heathcliff because he gave the immediate impression that he is an uncivilized ruffian that has no manners. However, this impression comes from the fact that Hindley prevented Heathcliff from continuing his education after the death of Mr. Earnshaw (Hindley's father), and forced him to work in the fields and act as a servant rather than an equal member of the house.
When she gets there they treat her very well, washing her feet and brushing her hair, and they force Heathcliff to leave and treat him as unworthy of being in their presence. I think this is responsible for the attitude Catherine develops that she is better than Heathcliff in some way. Ultimately I think Catherine is drawn to their sophisticated lifestyle and is also attracted to Edgar Linton.
I seriously just laughed so hard. I don't believe they ever officially adopted Heathcliff, the family probably wouldn't of let Mr. Earnshaw. So no, I don't believe it is incest..
What are the different age levels or generations of the characters? I feel that there are too many people with the same last names that it is difficult to figure out who is from the same generations and who is not.
The original Mr. Earnshaw is Cathy and Hindley's father, and the one who adopted Heathcliff. Hareton is Hindley's son, and Hindley's wife died rather shortly after childbirth. Those are all of the Earnshaws. Mr. and Mrs. Linton are Edgar and Isabella's parents. Cathy becomes the next Mrs. Linton after she marries Edgar.
Alright, why won't Hindley even let Heathcliff act civilized and try and show he's changed for the dinner when the Linton's come? Like I understand he hates Heathcliff, but wouldn't having him clean and acting properly make him look a lot better? How is Hindley even have that much hate?

... so Hindley always despised Heathcliff, and always held a grudge towards him. I mean imagine if your parents adopted a kid and loved him/her more than they loved you, their biological child.

I think this is because he has nowhere else to go. Mr. Earnshaw took him and introduced him to a totally new environment when he was really young so that's all he's really ever known. Also. I don't think he wants to leave Catherine.
I suppose it would be unorthdox for an adoptive child to inherit the management of Wuthering Heights over a "blood" child. Also, Mr. Earnshaw's authority over Wuthering Heights ended as he died, as did his preferential treatment of Heathcliff. Even if he had left the manor to Heathcliff, Hindley might have disregarded his father's wishes and tried to take over.
Why doesn't Hindley just let Heathclif go if he does not like him so much and is the "revenge" Hindley eants on Heathclif him taking away his education?
Why did Catherine's family let her stay with the Linton's for five weeks? Did Hindley really just not care that his sister was injured and at a strangers home...
Catherine is probably using Edgar to gain wealth so that she can help Heathcliff with any financial issues, plus, since her brother approves of the union, it gets him off her back about her affections for Heathcliff.
Can anyone explain what caused Hindley to go absolutely mad and drop his own child off of the banister? I mean, that's just a very horrid, vile, and just flat out wrong thing to do!
Why has Catherine become this self-indulgent monstrosity who only cares about herself. Ex: she agrees to marry Edgar, while at the same time announcing her love of heathcliff
